Paper Thin: Best Practices in Managing the Materials Supply Chain

August 11, 2021

11:30AM – 12:30PM Central Time

From our materials suppliers:

We know print service providers are under siege by shortages and price increases in both paper and printing supplies. For paper, there are many factors contributing to this upheaval;

  • Domestic paper suppliers have converted machines that used to make printing papers over to machines that make liner board.
  • China shut down hundreds of paper mills, while increasing its demand for paper.
  • The shortage of imported paper is compressing supply, making the market even tighter and the recovery period longer.
  • The shortage of shipping containers has caused a HUGE backlog for imported paper putting even more pressure on domestic suppliers.
  • The cost of raw pulp has increased dramatically during the past 24 months.
  • Fuel costs and trucking shortages are further driving up costs.

What can be done?

Printers are needing to plan further and further to stay ahead. Some printers are quoting lead times of three months or more to receive their paper shipments, and some mills are not even taking new orders until they clear their backlog. Printers are feeling the financial pinch as well as experiencing print scheduling shakeups.
